Rotary ion exchanger is a compact and energy-saving ion exchange technology that provides continuous operation. It is mainly used for the separation of ions from the liquid phase and is used in industrial applications such as water treatment, demineralization, dealkalization. This system carries ion exchange resin on a rotating rotor and is divided into two main compartments: one compartment is used for processing and the other compartment is used for regeneration.

The working principle starts with the ions being held on the resin surface as the feed water passes over the rotor. During this process, the water is distributed to the compartments inside the rotor, where the ions bind to the resin. Then, the ions are cleaned using acidic and alkaline solutions in the regeneration compartment to renew the resin and maintain the efficiency of the system.

The system has the capacity to operate with high flow rates; it can be designed with flow rates generally ranging from 5–200 m³/h. The pressure drop is usually around 0.2–0.5 bar. Resin capacity varies between 1.0–2.5 eq/L for fresh resin, and regenerant consumption generally requires 4–6% acid solution for cation resin and 4–6% NaOH solution for anion resin. The effluent quality is quite high; conductivity can be reduced to <1 µS/cm and total dissolved solids (TDS) <1 mg/L.

It is widely used especially for steam boiler feed water in power plants, ultrapure water production in the pharmaceutical industry, ion removal in the food and beverage industry, and various solutions in the chemical sector. The advantages of this system include uninterrupted operation, compact installation, automation and low operating costs. It also offers an environmentally friendly solution with low energy consumption and minimum chemical use.
